Interactive Brokers, the Wall Street brokerage firm managing more than $900 billion in client assets, has launched cryptocurrency staking services, beginning with Ethereum. The firm rolled out the new offering in partnership with Zerohash, a crypto infrastructure provider, marking a notable expansion of its digital asset capabilities.
The move builds on Interactive Brokers' existing crypto presence, which already allows clients to trade up to 20 digital assets. The addition of staking represents a step beyond simple trading, enabling clients to earn rewards by participating in the Ethereum network's proof-of-stake consensus mechanism directly through their brokerage accounts.
The launch signals continued institutional interest in generating yield from digital assets, not just price exposure. As traditional financial firms seek to deepen client engagement with crypto products, staking services represent a relatively straightforward on-ramp that aligns with familiar income-generating concepts such as dividends or interest. Interactive Brokers' scale gives the development added weight, as it brings passive crypto yield to a large and established retail and institutional client base.
Going forward, it will be worth monitoring whether Interactive Brokers extends staking support to other proof-of-stake assets beyond Ethereum, and how competitors within the traditional brokerage space respond to the move. Regulatory developments around staking in the United States may also shape the pace at which similar offerings emerge across the industry.
