SoFi launches interest-bearing, FDIC-insured tokenized deposit for crypto users

SoFi has launched SOFIE, a tokenized deposit product designed for crypto users that offers a 4.4% annual percentage yield alongside Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) coverage. The product also gives users the option to convert their holdings into SoFiUSD, a dollar-denominated digital asset tied to the deposit. The launch marks SoFi's formal entry into the tokenized deposit space, combining traditional banking protections with blockchain-based functionality.

Tokenized deposits have gained increasing attention from both fintech companies and traditional financial institutions as a method of bridging regulated banking infrastructure with digital asset markets. Unlike stablecoins, which are typically issued by non-bank entities and carry varying degrees of regulatory oversight, tokenized deposits represent claims on actual bank deposits and can qualify for standard depositor protections such as FDIC insurance.

The move by SoFi signals growing institutional appetite for products that offer yield-bearing, regulated alternatives to existing stablecoins and crypto savings instruments. As regulators in the United States continue to develop clearer frameworks around digital assets, FDIC-backed tokenized products could attract users who have previously been cautious about the risk profile of uninsured crypto holdings.

Observers will be watching whether other fintech and banking platforms follow SoFi's approach, particularly as stablecoin legislation advances in Washington. The competitive dynamics between tokenized deposits and established stablecoins such as USDC and USDT may also become more pronounced in the months ahead.
