Wall Street's BNY expands stablecoin services for institutions, starting with Circle's USDC

Bank of New York Mellon (BNY), one of Wall Street's oldest and largest custodian banks, has announced an expansion of its stablecoin-related services for institutional clients, beginning with support for Circle's USD Coin (USDC). The move marks a significant step by a major traditional financial institution into the digital asset infrastructure space, extending beyond simple custody into broader stablecoin utility for its institutional customer base.

BNY, which manages approximately $52 trillion in assets under custody, has been gradually building out its digital asset capabilities over recent years. The bank previously received regulatory approval to hold cryptocurrency on behalf of clients and has explored blockchain-based settlement solutions. The decision to begin with USDC reflects Circle's position as one of the most regulated and transparent stablecoin issuers, with the token fully backed by cash and short-term U.S. Treasury securities.

The development signals growing institutional acceptance of stablecoins as legitimate financial infrastructure rather than purely speculative instruments. With the U.S. stablecoin regulatory framework advancing through Congress, major financial players appear to be positioning themselves ahead of formal legislative clarity, seeking first-mover advantages in what analysts expect to become a critical segment of institutional finance.

Market observers will be watching whether other major custodians and financial institutions follow BNY's lead, and whether the bank expands its stablecoin services to include additional tokens beyond USDC in the coming months.
