South Africa’s Absa Becomes First African Bank to Offer Crypto Custody

South Africa's Absa Group has become the first bank on the African continent to offer digital asset custody services to institutional clients. The newly launched Digital Asset Custody platform provides regulated access to the storage and transfer of four digital assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), USD Coin (USDC), and XRP Ledger (XRPL)-based assets. The rollout follows Absa receiving the necessary regulatory approvals to operate the service within South Africa.

The move positions Absa, one of Africa's largest financial institutions, at the forefront of institutional crypto adoption in the region. Regulatory clarity around digital assets has been gradually developing in South Africa, with the country's Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) having moved to bring crypto asset service providers under a formal licensing framework in recent years. This regulatory progress has opened a pathway for traditional banks to enter the space.

The launch signals a broader shift in how established financial institutions on the continent are approaching digital assets. By offering a regulated custody solution, Absa provides institutional investors — including asset managers and corporate treasuries — with a compliant framework to hold digital assets without relying on third-party crypto-native custodians.

Industry observers will be watching whether other major African banks follow Absa's lead, and whether the custody platform expands to include additional digital assets or jurisdictions beyond South Africa in the coming months.
