Mt. Gox pushes creditor repayment deadline to 2027 in sixth extension

Mt. Gox, the defunct Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, has extended its creditor repayment deadline to 2027, marking the sixth such extension in the long-running bankruptcy proceedings. The extension was granted as a portion of creditors remain unpaid due to incomplete submission procedures and ongoing payment processing complications. The latest postponement pushes the final repayment window back by approximately one year from the previously established deadline.

Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 after losing approximately 850,000 Bitcoin to hackers in what remains one of the largest exchange breaches in cryptocurrency history. The rehabilitation process, overseen by trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, has been slowly distributing recovered funds to creditors over the past several years. While some creditors received portions of their Bitcoin and cash repayments in 2024, the process has been repeatedly delayed by the complexity of coordinating distributions across multiple exchanges and jurisdictions worldwide.

The continued delays carry implications for Bitcoin markets, as the remaining Mt. Gox holdings represent a meaningful volume of Bitcoin that creditors may choose to liquidate upon receipt. Market participants have historically monitored Mt. Gox-related transfers closely, as large distributions have the potential to introduce selling pressure into the broader market. To date, however, realized market impact from completed distributions has been more measured than many analysts initially anticipated.

Creditors and market observers will be watching for further updates from Kobayashi's office regarding revised timelines, outstanding payment volumes, and any new procedural requirements affecting those who have not yet received their distributions.
