Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has added 2,823 Bitcoin during the second quarter, bringing its total holdings to 43,000 BTC. The acquisition positions the company as the world's third-largest corporate Bitcoin treasury, according to a report by Bitcoin Magazine. Metaplanet now trails only Strategy and Twenty One Capital in terms of corporate Bitcoin reserves.
Metaplanet has been aggressively accumulating Bitcoin over the past year as part of a defined treasury strategy, mirroring an approach popularized by Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, under the leadership of Michael Saylor. The Tokyo-listed firm has drawn significant attention from investors seeking exposure to Bitcoin through traditional equity markets, particularly within the Asian financial landscape where direct cryptocurrency investment remains complex for institutional players.
The milestone underscores a broader trend of corporate entities integrating Bitcoin into their balance sheets as a long-term reserve asset. With three major corporations now holding tens of thousands of Bitcoin collectively, the strategy is becoming increasingly mainstream among publicly traded companies. This concentration of Bitcoin in corporate treasuries also raises ongoing discussions around supply dynamics and long-term price implications for the asset.
Observers will be watching whether Metaplanet continues its acquisition pace into the third quarter, and whether its rising profile attracts further institutional interest or regulatory scrutiny in Japan. The competitive landscape among corporate Bitcoin holders also remains one to monitor, as newer entrants like Twenty One Capital continue to scale their own positions rapidly.
