Kraken in talks to buy 15% stake in DeFi lender Aave at $385 million valuation
Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken is in advanced talks to acquire a 15% stake in decentralized finance lending protocol Aave, according to a report from CoinDesk. The deal is being negotiated at a valuation of approximately $385 million for the DeFi platform, which would mark one of the more significant institutional investments in a decentralized lending protocol to date.
Aave is one of the largest and most established lending protocols in the DeFi ecosystem, enabling users to borrow and lend a wide range of crypto assets through smart contracts without centralized intermediaries. Kraken, a major centralized exchange, has been actively exploring ways to broaden its product offerings and deepen its presence in the broader Web3 space beyond traditional spot and derivatives trading.
Should the deal close, it would represent a notable convergence between centralized exchange infrastructure and decentralized finance. Such a move could signal growing institutional interest in acquiring stakes in DeFi protocols rather than simply integrating their services, potentially influencing how other exchanges approach similar opportunities in the sector.
Observers will be watching whether the transaction receives regulatory scrutiny given the current landscape around DeFi oversight in key markets including the United States and the European Union. The terms of any governance rights Kraken might receive as part of the stake, particularly regarding Aave's native AAVE token and its governance framework, are also expected to draw close attention.
