Germany's Sparkassen savings bank network has launched cryptocurrency trading services for its customers, enabling the purchase of five digital assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and Polygon (POL). The rollout began on Monday and is being facilitated through DekaBank, the network's central asset management institution. The service is accessible via the Sparkassen banking app and is being introduced gradually across participating savings banks within the network.
Sparkassen is one of Germany's largest and most widely used retail banking networks, serving tens of millions of customers across the country. The decision to integrate cryptocurrency trading into its existing app infrastructure reflects a broader trend among traditional European financial institutions seeking to offer digital asset services within regulated banking environments. The phased rollout indicates a cautious approach to adoption, consistent with the network's conservative institutional profile.
Notably, the service currently carries restrictions on transferring purchased cryptocurrencies to external personal wallets, meaning customers will hold their assets in a custodial arrangement through the bank. This limitation distinguishes the offering from standalone crypto exchanges and may draw scrutiny from users who prioritize self-custody. Nevertheless, the move signals continued institutional integration of digital assets into mainstream European banking.
Observers will be watching how quickly the service expands across the full Sparkassen network and whether wallet transfer restrictions are lifted over time as regulatory clarity in the European Union continues to develop under the MiCA framework.
