French banking giant Crédit Agricole launches EURXT euro stablecoin

French banking giant Crédit Agricole has entered the stablecoin market through its asset servicing subsidiary CACEIS, launching a euro-pegged digital token called EURXT on the Ethereum blockchain. The initial issuance stands at 20.02 million tokens, with each unit pegged one-to-one to the euro. The move marks one of the most significant steps by a major European financial institution into regulated stablecoin infrastructure.

CACEIS, which manages custody and fund administration services for institutional clients, developed EURXT to facilitate euro-denominated settlements within digital asset ecosystems. The stablecoin is specifically designed to support institutional capital flows and provide access to tokenized investment funds, reflecting a broader industry push to bring traditional financial instruments onto blockchain rails.

The launch carries notable implications for Europe's evolving digital asset landscape, particularly as the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, known as MiCA, establishes a clearer legal framework for stablecoin issuers. With a regulated bank standing behind the token, EURXT could attract institutional participants who have remained cautious about adopting stablecoins issued by non-bank entities. It also positions Crédit Agricole as a direct competitor in a space currently dominated by privately issued dollar-backed stablecoins.

Market observers will be watching whether other major European banks follow with similar offerings, and how quickly EURXT achieves meaningful transaction volumes within tokenized fund platforms and institutional settlement networks.
