Coinbase and Better Mortgage have announced the general availability of Bitcoin-backed mortgages, allowing eligible customers in the United States to use their Bitcoin holdings as collateral to secure home loans. The product is now accessible to a broader pool of borrowers following a limited debut earlier this year, marking a significant expansion of crypto-collateralized lending into the traditional mortgage market.
The offering was first introduced in June, when Better and Coinbase facilitated what was reported as the first Bitcoin-backed mortgage loan. Under the arrangement, borrowers can pledge Bitcoin held on Coinbase as collateral without being required to sell their holdings, enabling them to access liquidity while maintaining exposure to potential price appreciation in the asset.
The move reflects a growing effort by financial institutions and crypto platforms to bridge decentralized digital assets with conventional financial products. As Bitcoin continues to gain recognition as a store of value among institutional and retail investors, demand for lending products that treat it as a legitimate financial asset has increased steadily across the industry.
Observers will be watching whether the product drives meaningful adoption among homebuyers who hold significant Bitcoin positions, and whether regulatory scrutiny around crypto-collateralized lending intensifies as these products become more widely available. The performance of Bitcoin's price volatility relative to loan collateral requirements will also be a key factor in determining long-term viability.
