Circle agrees to buy cross-border payments firm Tazapay for $400 million

Circle Internet Financial has agreed to acquire Tazapay, a Singapore-based cross-border payments company, for $400 million, according to a report from CoinDesk. The deal represents one of the more significant acquisitions in the digital payments space in recent months, as Circle moves to expand its operational footprint beyond its core stablecoin business.

Tazapay, founded in 2021, has built a platform designed to simplify international business-to-business payments across emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and beyond. The company has developed infrastructure that enables merchants and enterprises to send and receive funds across borders with reduced friction and lower fees compared to traditional correspondent banking rails. Circle, best known as the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has been actively seeking to broaden its product portfolio following its public listing.

The acquisition signals growing interest among stablecoin issuers in capturing real-world payment infrastructure rather than relying solely on third-party integrations. By bringing Tazapay's network and licensing capabilities in-house, Circle would gain direct access to payment corridors across key growth markets, positioning USDC as a settlement layer within those flows.

Observers will be watching how regulators in multiple jurisdictions respond to the combined entity, particularly given the cross-border licensing requirements Tazapay holds. Integration timelines and any potential changes to Tazapay's existing merchant relationships are also expected to draw attention in the coming months.
