BlackRock joins SBI and Startale to link tokenized MMFs with Japanese yen stablecoins

BlackRock, SBI Holdings, and Startale have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with SBI's Japanese yen-pegged stablecoin, JPYSC. The collaboration aims to create interoperability between tokenized real-world assets and stablecoin infrastructure within Japan's evolving digital asset ecosystem.

The partnership brings together three significant players in traditional finance and blockchain technology. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has been expanding its tokenized fund offerings globally, most notably through its BUIDL fund. SBI Holdings is one of Japan's largest financial conglomerates with deep roots in both conventional finance and crypto investment, while Startale is a blockchain infrastructure company focused on Web3 development in Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

The move signals growing institutional interest in bridging on-chain financial instruments with local currency stablecoin rails. Connecting tokenized money market funds to a yen-denominated stablecoin could provide Japanese investors with a more seamless pathway to access yield-bearing digital assets while managing currency exposure domestically. It also reflects a broader industry trend of integrating regulated financial products with blockchain-based settlement infrastructure.

Key developments to monitor include regulatory engagement with Japan's Financial Services Agency, the technical framework Startale will deploy to enable the integration, and whether the MOU progresses toward a formal product launch with defined timelines and participation criteria.
