BlackRock Cuts IBIT In-Kind Conversion Minimum To $1M
BlackRock has reduced the in-kind conversion minimum for its iShares Bitcoin Trust from $25 million to $1 million, potentially making the mechanism available to a wider group of institutional participants.
BlackRock has lowered the minimum threshold for in-kind conversions on its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) from $25 million to $1 million, according to a report by NewsBTC. The change significantly reduces the barrier for institutional participants seeking to engage with the fund's in-kind creation and redemption mechanism.
In-kind conversions allow authorized participants to exchange Bitcoin directly for ETF shares — or vice versa — rather than transacting in cash. This mechanism is generally considered more tax-efficient and operationally streamlined for larger institutional investors. Since IBIT launched in January 2024 as part of the first wave of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, it has grown into one of the most actively traded products in the space, accumulating billions of dollars in assets under management.
The reduction in the minimum threshold is expected to open access to a broader segment of institutional participants, including mid-sized firms that may have previously been priced out of the in-kind process. Greater participation in this mechanism could contribute to tighter bid-ask spreads and improved price efficiency for the fund. It may also signal BlackRock's intent to deepen liquidity and broaden the IBIT ecosystem beyond the largest financial institutions.
Market observers will be watching whether the adjusted threshold leads to a measurable uptick in in-kind activity and whether other spot Bitcoin ETF issuers respond with similar changes to their own operational structures.
