Binance faces EU service limits next week as MiCA rules take effect
Binance will limit EU onboarding and services from July 1 under MiCA rules after failing to gain authorization from a member state, while withdrawals remain available for users.
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, will begin restricting onboarding and services for users across the European Union starting July 1, following its failure to secure authorization under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework. The exchange confirmed that while new user onboarding and certain services will be limited, existing EU users will retain access to withdrawal functions during the transition period.
MiCA, which represents the European Union's comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, formally took effect for crypto asset service providers at the close of June 2024, with full enforcement now advancing into 2025. To legally operate within the EU under MiCA, exchanges must obtain authorization from at least one EU member state. Binance has not secured such authorization from any member state ahead of the July 1 deadline, triggering the service limitations.
The development signals a significant compliance challenge for one of the crypto industry's most prominent platforms in a major global market. The EU represents a substantial user base for centralized exchanges, and Binance's restricted access could redirect European retail and institutional users toward MiCA-compliant competitors that have successfully navigated the authorization process.
Observers will be watching whether Binance accelerates efforts to obtain MiCA authorization from an EU member state, which would allow the exchange to resume full operations across the bloc under the framework's passporting provisions.
